Q. What should a rider expect on their first trip to the DR?
A. The best kite trip ever! Good action, lots of support, next level food and partying.
Q. What should riders bring?
A. Got to pack a smile, it goes a long way here, a smile can make or break the trip.
Q. Is the water crowded?
A. Yes and No. Two factors make the near shore area of kite beach very crowded. 1. Advanced riders seem to like to ride together. 2. The traditional way of learning takes up a lot of room. On the other hand, the reef has very few riders and there is miles of super reef at, upwind and down wind of kite beach. So, if you like blue water or waves, you got the place to yourself. If you like riding in front of the beach...get ready for a lot-o-traffic!
Q. So does the standard kite ration, 20 guys to 2 girls apply?
A. On the water ya, in the clubs after midnight, it is more like 5 chicas to every guy.
Q. What is the down side?
A. Four and a half of those girls are Rent-a-Friends.
Q. ...and the downside?
A. (laugh)
Q. Where does that leave the kite girls?
A. The same applies. Girls love it here, Dominican guys have PHDs in F-U-N! They kite all day and party all night, the kite beaches are loaded with young pros who have lots of time and energy for entertaining!
Q. Is there a lot of crime?
A. No, but everything is relative. Cabarete is a small, one road town. The beach is really where people are. People who travel here should expect to see smiles. With that said, budget travelers who rent the cheapest rooms should not be surprised if they find things missing.
Q. So it is better to stay ocean front?
A. Ya, probably the biggest reason is your right on the action, but yes, the ocean front units have light security.
Q. Any other pit falls?
A. Ya, the DR is a conservative Latin society, that means no tolerance drugs.
Q. So if your caught smoking a joint, your screwed?
A. You don't want to get caught with drugs here, jails have no running water or bath rooms. With that said, locals and Police love tourists and are extremely accommodating towards visitors. They know your coming here to have a good time and they are supportive.
Q. So why does it get windy?
A. Basically kite beach wind is solar driven. The beach faces North East, the sun rises, heats up the land, that air lifts and strong cool trades lock in.
Q. So the best action is afternoon?
A. Exacto!
Q. How do you get around?
A. Most kiters don't rent cars, they get around via moto taxi.
Q. Is it safe?
A. I think it is, but not everyone agrees with me.
Q. Do you tell the drivers to take it easy?
A. It is a good idea to tell them to go slow.
Q. Any other good tips?
A. Ya, the finger! If you don't want goods or services, raise the index finger and wag it. Everyone here respects the finger!

Congatulations to Agustina "Pica" Cerruti. Pica recently passed the KITEs Method Coaches Course directed by Mario Sampaolesi of Kitebeach School Argentina.
Pica is 25 and a web designer, www.estudioaloha.com , from Buenos Aires, Argentina. She brings a wealth of board sport experience including windsurfing, surfing and snowboarding, but there are two things in life she loves, they are kiteboarding and travel.
